Understanding how to write a U.S.-style resume can significantly increase your chances of getting an interview.

In this guide, we will walk you through the key steps to creating a strong and professional resume.


1. Keep Your Resume Clean and Easy to Read

Your resume creates the first impression.

To stand out among other applicants, your resume should look professional, organized, and easy to scan.

  • Keep your resume to one page if possible.
  • Make important sections such as experience, education, and certifications easy to find.

Tip: Employers often review hundreds of resumes. If your resume is too long or difficult to read, it may be overlooked. A clear, well-organized resume helps employers quickly understand your strengths.

2. Write a Strong Summary or Profile

At the top of your resume, include a short professional summary that highlights who you are and what you bring to the position.

  • If you are a new graduate, focus on your goals and motivation.
  • If you have experience, highlight your key skills and accomplishments.

Example

Entry-level applicant:

"Dependable certified CNA with excellent communication skills, seeking to provide compassionate care and support to patients."

Experienced professional:

"Experienced Medical Assistant with 5+ years in a fast-paced clinic environment, skilled in phlebotomy, patient care, and team coordination."

3. Highlight Your Experience and Skills

Employers often focus most on the experience section. Structure this section clearly using the following format:

  1. Employer name, location, and employment dates
  2. Your position and department
  3. Key responsibilities and accomplishments

Example:

Medical Assistant, ABC Clinic, Dallas, TX

(Jan 2020 – Dec 2022)

  • Assisted in patient triage and prepared rooms for clinical procedures
  • Performed phlebotomy and EKGs with 95% accuracy
  • Maintained patient records and scheduled follow-up appointments

4. List Your Education (Most Recent First)

Always list your most recent education at the top of the education section.

  • Include the school name, location, degree or certificate, and graduation year.
  • If you are still studying, use terms such as "in progress" or "present".

5. Include Certifications and Licenses

Certifications are extremely important in healthcare roles such as CNA, PCT, EKG Technician, or Medical Assistant.

  • List the certification name, issuing organization, and date issued.
  • BLS or ACLS certifications are required by many healthcare employers.

Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), Texas Department of Health Services, Jan 2023.

AHA BLS Certified, American Heart Association, Dec 2022.

6. Showcase Key Skills

The skills section contains important keywords that employers often scan quickly when reviewing resumes.

  • Core skills: Patient Care, Teamwork, EMR documentation
  • Additional strengths: Bilingual communication (Korean/English), CPR certification, EKG skills

Example:

  • Proficient in Cerner and Epic EMR systems
  • Bilingual patient communication (Korean/English)
  • Skilled in vital signs monitoring, phlebotomy, and EKG procedures
