Why Is BLS Certification Important?
A practical guide to AHA BLS Provider Certification for healthcare professionals, students, and international residents
If you work or study in healthcare, you may have heard someone ask, “Do you have a current BLS certification?”
BLS stands for Basic Life Support and teaches essential lifesaving skills for emergencies such as cardiac arrest and airway obstruction.
One of the most widely recognized programs for healthcare professionals is the AHA (American Heart Association) BLS Provider Certification.
What Do You Learn in BLS?
BLS is more than simply learning chest compressions. The course focuses on recognizing emergencies and responding effectively for adults, children, and infants.
Practice age-appropriate CPR techniques and high-quality chest compressions.
Learn how to safely and effectively use an automated external defibrillator.
Learn how to respond to choking and other airway obstruction situations.
Practice communication and teamwork when multiple healthcare professionals respond together.
Why Does BLS Matter?
The reason is simple: an emergency can happen anywhere and at any time.
A patient may suddenly deteriorate in a hospital room, outpatient clinic, testing area, school, workplace, or community setting.
In those first moments, the ability to recognize the emergency, call for help, begin effective CPR, and use an AED can be critical.
It is practical training designed to help you respond with greater skill and confidence when a real emergency occurs.
Who May Need BLS Certification?
BLS certification is commonly associated with healthcare professionals, but the need for certification depends on your employer, school, profession, or organization.
Nurses, physicians, emergency medical personnel, medical assistants, patient care staff, healthcare students, and other professionals may be asked to maintain a current BLS Provider Certification.
If you need BLS for work, school, clinical training, or another requirement, always confirm which certification provider your organization accepts.

How Long Is AHA BLS Certification Valid?
If you need to maintain an active certification, check the expiration date on your card and renew before it expires.
Renewal is also a valuable opportunity to refresh CPR and AED skills that may become less familiar over time.
How Does the DMS AHA BLS Course Work?
The DMS Care Training Center AHA BLS course uses a blended learning format that combines online learning with an in-person hands-on skills session.
Complete the Online Portion
Complete approximately 1.5 hours of required online learning before your hands-on appointment.
Attend a Hands-on Skills Session
Complete approximately 30 minutes of hands-on CPR and AED practice using training equipment and manikins.
Complete the Skills Check
Demonstrate the required lifesaving skills during the practical evaluation.
Receive Your AHA BLS Provider eCard
After successful completion of the required online learning and hands-on skills evaluation, the AHA BLS Provider eCard is issued.
The Goal Is More Than Passing a Course
Watching CPR in a video and actually performing CPR are very different experiences.
Knowing where to place your hands is different from maintaining the correct compression rate, depth, recoil, and technique during a hands-on session.
The same is true for using an AED.
That is why the most important question after BLS training is not only “Did I receive my certification?” but also “Could I perform these skills if someone needed help?”
