Heart Anatomy and Blood Circulation

3. The Two Circulation Pathways
Blood circulation is divided into pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation. Together, they form one continuous loop.
🔵 Pulmonary Circulation
Oxygen-poor blood moves through the right side of the heart to the lungs, where it releases carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen.
🔴 Systemic Circulation
Oxygen-rich blood moves through the left side of the heart and into the aorta, which distributes it to tissues throughout the body.

Arteries vs. Veins
Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Veins carry blood toward the heart. They are not named based on oxygen level.
Pulmonary Artery and Veins
The pulmonary artery carries oxygen-poor blood, while the pulmonary veins carry oxygen-rich blood. This is a common exam question.
Right Side of the Heart
The right atrium and right ventricle receive oxygen-poor blood and send it to the lungs.
Left Side of the Heart
The left atrium and left ventricle receive oxygen-rich blood and send it to the body.
Oxygen-poor blood moves through the right atrium and right ventricle to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. Oxygen-rich blood returns through the pulmonary veins and moves through the left atrium, left ventricle, and aorta to the body.
